Easy Rider Road Show
The Easy Rider Road Show is dedicated to the bicycle as a phenomenon of subculture. The two-part exhibition shows six photographic projects by international photographers. Organized jointly by musuku - Museum der Subkulturen and the Stadtmuseum Berlin, the show first tours through the city and can then be seen in the Märkisches Museum.
In the first part (“Volume 1”) the Easy Rider Road Show is on the road every weekend in August and September on five converted cargo bikes in Berlin. It stops at different places and invites people - whether they live there or are on a visit - to look at the pictures. The tours usually start at the Märkisches Museum and run throughout the entire city of Berlin. >> Current information about the tours on the musuku website
In the second part ("Volume 2") the Easy Rider Road Show will be on view as an extended special exhibition in the Märkisches Museum from November on.
The photo projects
Since the first New York “Bike Kill” in 2002, Tod Seelie has been photographing the competitions in which punks compete against each other on home-made bicycle constructions. A passionate cyclist himself, Seelie is represented in the exhibition with another series about cycling together and the Cuban bicycle enthusiast Félix Ramón Guirola Cepero, who builds record-breaking high bikes.
Julie Glassberg accompanied the members of the Black Label Bike Club for several years. So she was able to take pictures of the media-shy group away from the street and portray the anarchist community in their wild performances. In the “Bike Wars” taking place in Berlin-Kreuzberg, only one person remains in the saddle at the end of a tournament because the bikes of the other participants are no longer upright. “Bike Wars” can be compared to pogo dancing on a bike. Christophe Gateau photographed them.
The London “BikeStormz” have long since left the realm of subculture. Thousands of young, mostly male, participants ride with them. The aim of the movement is to keep young people away from drugs and violence and to motivate them to do acrobatic cycling. Adam Corbett documented the wild style of London's cycling life.
The Chilangos Low Bike Club shows its own bike aesthetic. The Mexican US immigrants convert their bicycles into chrome-plated, lowered “low riders”. Hailing from the slums of Mexico City, Chilangos reject crime and drugs. On Sundays they ride through the city as a group - and against the stereotype that everyone in the neighborhood is criminal. The French photographer Jeoffrey Guillemard accompanied the club members on a daily basis.
The Easy Rider Road Show is a project of the musuku - Museum der Subkulturen in cooperation with the Stadtmuseum Berlin. A newspaper was published for the exhibition. It will be distributed free of charge during the Easy Rider Road Show tours, is displayed in the Märkisches Museum and can be requested as a PDF from presse@musuku.de.
